Before he moved here, Dogsong was a nice little town. We only had a population of about two hundred, and nobody had even heard of us. We were a quaint little town in the country, where everybody knew everybody; everyone was friends. After school got out the kids would romp in the fields with the stray dogs that wandered around. They were nobody's dogs; just a pack of five or six strays. They were allowed to come into some of the stores for a snack, and soon they became Dogsong's dogs. But then, that one summer, Professor Yani moved here. He was a strange old man with balding grey hair and clothes splattered with stains no one could identify. He was friendly but odd; no one really talked to him much; which didn't seem to bother him.
Rumor has it that Professor Yani's wife had just recently passed away, and he came to Dogsong to run away. We all knew to stay away from him once we heard that, so we did. No one ever spoke to him. The only time someone ever saw him out of this old metal lab is when he went shoppin' at the Winn-Dixie. That's when he noticed our dogs. He seemed to take a liking to them; maybe because he was so lonely. When he found out they were strays, he just scooped 'em up and brought 'em to his lab, which was as faraway from our little square as possible. For days he stayed in that lab; never came out. No one saw the dogs for at least a month, but sometimes people claimed to hear howls of anguish in the night. And then, on a hot July night, the dogs and Professor Yani revealed themselves again. [/size] A dog emerged from the shadows of Professor's Yani's lab. It was getting close to morning; a few of the early risers were there to witness it. Nobody could tell who the dog was, but something was different. Stan, who owned the Winn-Dixie, said that the dog and eyes the color of blood. And then the dog stepped out of the shadows, and into the fading moonlight. Stan nearly fainted; the whole dog was blood-red! It looked to be about four times it's normal size and had long, curved fangs curling out of it's muzzle, he said. A saber-toothed dog! More dogs appeared out of nowhere. Two other dogs appeared to be monsters, too - one had large, vampire-like wings growing out of it's fur and was floating off the ground, staring at him with eyes as black as night. A few of the other dogs appeared completely normal, but as the first ray of sunlight stroked a white dog's paw, there was a flash of great light. Stan fell backward in awe. What was going on? Was he dreaming?
"Professer...Y-Yani?" He stammered, watching angel wings grow out of the white dog's back. Then he realized that the blood-red dog had returned to normal and was waddling dopily over to him, panting. What?! Stan looked around blindly, trying to sight the hunchbacked old man. Carefully, he stood and walked into the lab. Again, he almost fainted. Laying in a puddle of blood was Professor Yani. He had teeth marks on his neck that looked so deep that if you stuck something in one wound it would fall out the other side. The smell of blood; murder, was immense. Of course, the only conclusion Stan could come to was the dogs. The mutant dogs. The mutant dogs of Dogsong. Word about Professor Yani and the mutant dogs spread faster than a wildfire in dry season. Everyone panicked; worried about their children, if it was safe. There were killer dogs roaming through their town, and the only option was to run away. But what if one of the dogs found them again? Tracked them down? The people of Dogsong suddenly were no longer happy and peaceful in their little down. They lived in fear for tomorrow; if they would live. At night, they wondered if a mutant moon dog would crawl up through their window and murder them painlessly. Most people fled the tiny town as fast as possible. Others, who were not as financially lucky, were forced to stay put.
The dogs were breeding. Breeding like mad. Each day it seemed the pack was growing; the danger. Most dogs had begun to feed off the humans, ambushing elders on their way to work. The Sun dogs could do nothing; they just tried to mind their own business. Some people became desperate and tried to own a Sun dog for protection, but they were no match against the twenty or so moon dogs that now overpopulated the humans. In less than a week, the population of Dogsong was completely wiped out. Now it was just the moon dogs and the sun dogs. [/blockquote]
