Bells yawned as she woke, and stretched her muscles, stiff from the night. She could tell it was early morning, because even though the sun wasn’t up yet, everything was a light blue. Leaves scattered around her, breezing to the north, getting caught in her fur. They were all odd colors, but such was expected for this time of year. Only the fir trees stand a chance for what is to come.
The chill of the air sent shivers shaking up Bells spine, one thing about autumn that she didn’t enjoy so much. The only thing really amazing were the trees, and the amazing hews of the normal green they bear.
Bells sat up slowly, and shook her thick fur around for no reason in particular. She finished standing up, and started heading south, the wind to her back, pushing her foreword.
The brittle grass pricked at the underneath of her paws annoyingly, but on she trod. The wind ruffled up her fur, and she was sure there were going to be plenty of uncomfortable knots. Well, more than normal. She laughed to herself. Her normally pretty, flowing coat was slowly getting more dirty and knotted and intertwined with unknown substances. Oh, how she wished for a human's hand around a brush, running down her face and neck and sides... if only they would come back.
Bells grunted quietly. Every time her mood was even slightly chipper, something would happen and make her think of all her lost brothers and sisters that never came back for her. The only human that ever deserved to die was the scientist. But what about the others? They were unjustified murders.
Suddenly, a smell of water hit her nose, and she perked up again. If she was to meet a bad dog, Mooner or Sunner, she would need fuel to protect herself. Although her powers would be meaningless until the sun was visible, she could stall until then.
Bells hurried along, starting to run. Maybe she could even take a bath in the water she smelled, and cleanse herself of the stench that was sure to be clinging to her grimy coat.
It was in sight! Or was it?
It was a puddle! What a tease! Bells snorted and plopped down, disappointed, on its 'banks'. As if it had any.
There were more crinkly dead leaves blowing here than where she had slept. They tumbled around, running into Bells and then flying over her when the northern wind picked up again.
Now bored, Bells watched as each little breeze sent ripples through the puddle, the water clear enough to drink. Though she wasn't really thirsty, she took a sip of probably the only clean water in Dogsong. There used to be plenty until... but no, she likes being happy and optimistic. Bells attempted a smile, but it came out all distorted and sad like. She sighed, and just as she did, something emerged a bit from the water beside her. A fish! Bells was surprised a fish could even survive in this little pond's conditions. Almost as much as Bells was surprised any dog could like living in Dogsong.
"Do you like living in this puddle, Fish?" Bells whispered to it, leaning closer to where she had seen it pop up. Uncharacteristically of a fish, he swam closer to the dog on the bank, wearing what Bells thought to be a fish's version of a frown.
"I don't like it here either. I miss... my family. I bet you do too, Fish. Are you all alone too?" The fish still wore that sad expression, but Bells thought it was a little more profound now.
"I thought so, Fish. Even you have the compassion to miss ones that loved you." Bells voice was at a volume for regular conversation now. "You are a decent fellow, Fish."
Bells dipped her paw into the puddle, and swirled it around. The fish immediately swam away, and Bells sighed. When her paw emerged from the surface again, it was a bit blue. Her eyes curiously met the horizon line, noticing that the sun was almost up. "Yea, Fish. I'd be scared of me too."
